St. Lorenzen

Traces of history

Culture, history and nature - these are the main features of the small comune St. Lorenzen in South Tyrol in northern Italy. The municipality of St. Lorenzen contains the villages Montal, Onach, Ellen, Hörschwang, Runggen, St. Martin and Moos, Maria Saalen, Stefansdorf, Sonnenburg, Fassing and Lothen.

The town is located in the middle of the western Puster Valley, at the confluence of the Rienz and the Gran Ega rivers, right at the entrance of the Val Badia. Surrounded by the unique and extraordinary mountain world St. Lorenzen is also called “the gateway to the Dolomites” and an ideal holiday destination for active vacationers who are looking for inspiring and unique experiences.

Historical monuments, magnificent buildings and a magical village centre characterise St. Lorenzen and the surrounding area. The village can offer numerous different experiences for culture enthusiasts and history lovers. You can follow an archaeological educational path and explore prehistoric settlements, the Roman road station Mansio Sebatum and monumental castles. Two mediaeval castles were built on top of two hills and watch over the village. The Michelsburg was once one of the most important castles of the western Puster Valley and is now privately owned. In the 11th century the Benedictine order received the small castle “Suanapurc”, nowadays known as the Sonnenburg. After that a convent was built there.

Another famous sight is the museum “Antiquarium”, which informs you about the past and history of the village in an interesting and educational way. Furthermore, you can visit the nearby small town Bruneck and find out more about it.

Also active vacationers and sports lovers will benefit from holidays in St. Lorenzen. They will find a wide variety of hiking possibilities, cycle paths and tennis courts.
